Soft Tissue Sarcomas

Undifferentiated Pleomorphic Sarcoma

Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma is a rare and aggressive type of cancer that can occur in soft tissues, like muscles, fat, or connective tissues. "Undifferentiated" means the cancer cells don't have specific characteristics that identify them as a particular type of cancer, making them harder to classify.

"Pleomorphic" indicates that the cells can vary in shape and size. This cancer usually presents as a lump or swelling and can cause pain in the affected area. It tends to grow quickly and can spread to other parts of the body, particularly the lungs. Treatment typically involves pre-operative radiation therapy followed by surgery to remove the tumor. Chemotherapy or immunotherapy may be recommended as well.

Myxofibrosarcoma

Myxofibrosarcoma is a rare type of cancer that occurs in the soft tissues of the body. It usually affects adults and often appears as a lump or swelling that can be painful. These tumors have tentaclelike extensions and have a higher local recurrence rate in comparison to other soft tissue sarcomas. Treatment typically involves pre-operative radiation therapy followed by surgery to remove the tumor.

Liposarcoma

Liposarcoma is a rare type of cancer that starts in fat cells. It usually occurs in soft tissues, like those found in the arms and legs. Symptoms often include a lump or swelling, which may or may not be painful. This cancer can grow slowly but can also be aggressive and spread to other parts of the body. Treatment typically involves surgery to remove the tumor. Chemotherapy or radiation therapy may be recommended as well.

Myxoid Liposarcoma

Myxoid liposarcoma is a specific type of liposarcoma, which is a rare cancer that starts in fat cells. This type usually occurs in soft tissues and can appear as a lump or swelling. Symptoms may include pain or discomfort, but some people might not notice any symptoms at first.

Treatment typically involves surgery to remove the tumor. Chemotherapy or radiation therapy may be recommended as well.

Synovial Sarcoma

Synovial sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that starts in the cells around the joints, known as synovial cells, which help produce fluid for joint movement. Symptoms often include a lump or swelling near a joint, pain, or limited movement. This cancer can affect people of all ages but is more common in young adults. Treatment typically involves pre-operative radiation therapy followed by surgery to remove the tumor. Chemotherapy may be recommended as well.

Clear Cell Sarcoma

Clear cell sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that usually occurs in the soft tissues. It gets its name from the clear-looking cancer cells seen under a microscope. Symptoms typically include a lump or swelling in the affected area, and it may cause pain or discomfort. This cancer can be aggressive and may spread to other parts of the body. Treatment typically involves pre-operative radiation therapy followed by surgery to remove the tumor. Chemotherapy may be recommended as well.

Extra-Skeletal Myxoid Chondrosarcoma

Extra-skeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma is a rare type of cancer that occurs in soft tissues rather than in the bones. Symptoms can include pain or discomfort in the area where the tumor is located. Treatment typically involves pre-operative radiation therapy followed by surgery to remove the tumor.

Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor (MPNST)

A malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) is a rare type of cancer that forms in the protective sheaths surrounding nerves. It often develops in areas like the arms, legs, or torso. These tumors can cause symptoms such as pain, swelling, or numbness, especially if they press on nearby nerves. MPNSTs are often aggressive and can spread to other parts of the body. Treatment usually involves surgery to remove the tumor. Radiation therapy may also be recommended.
